Open minds

9 Meet the characters One of the core principles of Open Minds is that children change—and so should their learning experience. Content, language, cognitive demand and emotional focus are carefully adapted to each stage of primary development. This evolving cast and structure ensure age-appropriate themes, increasingly complex thinking and progressive communication challenges, maintaining motivation and relevance throughout the primary years. Levels 1–2 Learners meet Tom and Lucy, supported by animated characters who introduce English through stories, movement and hands-on activities. At this stage, learning is sensory, playful and highly supported, helping children build confidence and positive attitudes towards English. Levels 3–4 Learners follow Ava and Robin in cultural and pronunciation videos, while animated characters continue to guide them through familiar, everyday situations. Grammar becomes more explicit, with the help of the Grammar Genies, making abstract concepts accessible, memorable and engaging. Levels 5–6 Learners work with a diverse group of exchange students and new characters, reflecting their growing awareness of the wider world. Real communication, cultural exploration and more sophisticated language use are foregrounded, with grammar and skills support adapted to the cognitive and emotional needs of older primary students.
