1 Eclipses An eclipse happens when the Earth , the Moon and the Sun are aligned , so one hides the other. Because the plane of the lunar orbit i s ti lted in relation to the plane of the Earth's orbit, this perfect alignment of the celestial bodies only happens occasionally. Tides Tides are changes in the level of the seas and oceans. This is because of the force of gravitational attraction between the Earth and the Moon .
