3. Earth's systems and landforms The Earth is made up of four systems that interact closely with each other. 13 WORK WITH THE IMAGE. In this landscape, you can see the four systems of the Earth. a) Point out each system and describe what you can see. b) Do you think that in this place there are more living things than can be seen in the photo? Where are they? 14 E xplain the relationship that the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the geosphere and the biosphere have with the shape of the relief. Atmosphere. The gaseous layer that surrounds the Earth . It is the outermost system and is formed mostly of nitrogen and oxygen . Oxygen is an essential gas for many living things. Geosphere. The rocky and mineral part that makes up almost the entire mass of the planet. All the other systems are above the geosphere. The mineral salts dissolved in the water that living things need come from the geosphere. Hydrosphere. This system is made up of all the water on Earth , both the water found on the Earth's surface (in rivers, oceans, glaciers, etc.) and the water in the atmosphere (clouds and water vapour). Biosphere. All the living things that inhabit the Earth . The interaction of living things with each other and with the environment in which they live has a big inf luence on the other systems of the Earth . CHALLENGE 24
