The Dukha, the nomads of the steppes The Dukha (or Tsaatan) are a nomadic tribe of people who live on the cold steppes of Mongolia. Their lifestyle is based on herding reindeer, from which they obtain everything they need. The Dukha move around with their herds in search of water and pastures. They build camps and live in yurts, tents made from animal skins. The sur vival of the Inuit in extreme temperatures The Inuit live in the Arctic regions of North America . They hunt animals (polar bear, whales, seals, etc.) for food that must last them throughout the harsh winter. The Inuit also use the animals for their skins to make warm clothes, and their grease to use as fuel . Fishing is another essential activity for this people. In the last few decades, the Inuit have suf fered the ef fects of globalisation . This has led them to abandon some of their traditional ways of life. They depend on hunting, fishing and gathering to sur vive, which is why they periodically move around . The Pygmies live in small villages, in huts made of branches and mud . Their sur vival and lifestyle are at risk today due to forestr y, mining and the expansion of agricultural lands, which lead to the disappearance of forests. Also, the governments in the region are tr ying to make the Pygmies sedentar y. O T H E R P O I N T S O F V I E W 24
