Example B E A G E O G R A P H E R Create and interpret a population pyramid A population pyramid is a bar graph that shows population structure by age group and sex at a specific time. To create a population pyramid of a territory, follow the steps below: Organise the inhabitants by age group and males and females. Calculate what percentage of the total population each group represents (you could also use absolute values). Draw the vertical axis in the centre of the graph. Mark the age groups on the vertical axis in 5-year intervals, except the final group, which is usually left open (85 and over). Divide the horizontal axis into two sections. In each section, mark the population values: percentages or the absolute population. For absolute population, only some values are labelled, at equal intervals, to make them easier to read. Finally, draw bars to represent the following values: – On the right side of the pyramid, draw the bars for the female population. – On the left side, represent the values of the male population. State the place and year to which the data corresponds. The length of each orange bar shows the number of females in each age group as a percentage of the total population . A ver y long or ver y short bar signifies that an event has had an impact on the population . For example, a war, an epidemic, a baby boom, etc. The length of each green bar shows the number of males in each age group as a percentage of the total population .
