In the 8th centur y, the Muslims began to move into the south of the Mediter ranean and occupied a wide ter r itor y from Persia ( present-day Iran) to the Iber ian Peninsula . The occupied ter r itor y on the peninsula was called al-Andalus , and this place developed a r ich culture of music. A l-Andalus was one of the largest producers of musical instr uments . Thanks to musicians , a lot of these instr uments reached many other par ts of Europe. As well as this , a unique musical st yle appeared , known as Andalusian classical music, which was a fusion of Arabic music and the indigenous music of the occupied ter r itor ies . Since the early days of the Muslim Empire, women took part in the composition and performance of music, as well as being dancers. For example, the qainat were Arab female singers and musicians. Although some were of noble origin, most were slaves who received excellent musical training f rom childhood. Some of them ended up being released thanks to their musical skills. Specif ically, the al-Andalus qainat always had the status of f ree women. In addition to singing and playing instruments, the qainat had extensive knowledge of poetr y and composition, and many formed their own music schools. 23
