1 The process of digestion The stages of the digestion process are digestion, absorption and elimination of waste. Digestion. Food breaks down into its nutrients. In the mouth the food is chewed. The teeth, tongue and saliva turn the food into a bolus. The bolus passes into the pharynx, then into the oesophagus and finally into the stomach. In the stomach, gastric juices turn the bolus into chyme. The chyme passes into the small intestine. In the small intestine, intestinal juice, bile and pancreatic juice turn the chyme into chyle. The chyle is made up of nutrients and food remains that are not digested. Absorption. Nutrients pass through the walls of the small intestine and enter the blood. Elimination of waste. Food that is not digested is expelled outside the body. Faeces form in the large intestine. They leave the body through the anus. 1 2 3 investigate Find out more information about saliva.
