Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, 1492 (Adapted) Cristóbal Colón wrote a number of sailing diaries that have been lost. The Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas wrote a summar y of the diaries. It includes fragments from the originals. 3rd August We left on 3rd August 1492 from the barra de Saltes. 9th September Colón travelled 15 miles that day, but he registered less. He did not want people to get scared if the journey was long. 10th October The sailors became impatient and complained about the length of the voyage. But the Admiral encouraged them, telling them about the profits they would receive. He said there was no use complaining, he had come to look for the Indies and he would not stop until he found them. 12th October When they reached land , they saw ver y green trees and plenty of water, as well as different kinds of fruits. Ever yone jumped ashore. He told them to witness how he took possession of the island on behalf of the king and queen. Many people from the island gathered . These are the words of the Admiral: They were all completely naked and ver y young. Their hair has never been cut. They were painted black, white and red , but their skin is neither black nor white. They do not carr y weapons, and they do not know how to use them. I showed them swords but they took them and cut themselves.
