Vote to say which was the best. Discovering the World In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew left Seville in five ships. Their aim was to sail around the world. However, the voyage was very long and difficult. The crew didn’t have enough food and some of them died of hunger. When Magellan was killed in battle in April 1521, an explorer called Juan Sebastián Elcano took control of the last surviving ship, Victoria. In 1522, the expedition returned to Seville, three years after they started the voyage. The expedition showed that the Earth was round. Unfortunately, however, only 18 of the original 270 crew members returned alive. An Italian sailor called Antonio Pigafetta survived. He wrote about the voyage in his journals.
